Mastering three disciplines takes an extraordinary amount of time and training. Triathletes routinely push their bodies to the limits. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that triathlon-related injuries occur. It is quite common for triathletes to keep pushing through the pain. However, it is important to differentiate between the good pain that accompanies a hard training session and pain that lingers, which denotes an injury. Rest, ice, compression, painkillers can all help to alleviate the pain. However, sometimes this is not enough. With the next race just around the corner, most triathletes are keen to return to full fitness as soon as possible. Triathletes need to see a specialist that understands them, that knows what they are sacrificing and what they are putting their bodies through. And perhaps most importantly, they need somebody that knows what is required to get better.
In one of the largest studies on triathlon injuries to date, researchers found that more than a third of triathletes experienced an injury during the competition season. Moreover, approximately 80% of these injuries were overuse injuries. Here at The Putney Clinic we understand overuse injuries and we strongly advocate injury prevention. We will work with you to develop your strength, flexibility and endurance. By doing this, we aim to minimise your risk of injury in the future.
