Paediatric Osteopathy

PAEDIATRIC OSTEOPATHY

At The Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy, we offer paediatric osteopathy for babies and young children. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the structure and function of the body are intimately related. If the structure is not balanced and healthy, then the function is affected. Osteopaths do not treat conditions, but rather take a holistic approach to a patient. In treatments, they use manual techniques in order to restore, maintain, and support well-being. We believe that cranial osteopathy is an effective, non-invasive and safe treatment for people of any age, including newborn babies and children.

Who we treat

Our team of paediatric osteopaths is used to seeing children of all ages. This ranges from newborns adapting to life outside the womb; toddlers enthusiastically exploring the world around them; school children learning in new environments, and teenagers going through enormous physical and emotional changes. We welcome enquiries to discuss the possibilities of helping every individual on a case by case basis.

Our paediatric osteopaths

Our osteopaths have significant skills, knowledge and experience in working with these groups in particular. They are fully qualified osteopaths with postgraduate qualifications in paediatrics that demonstrates their specialist skills and knowledge in the anatomy, clinical presentations, examination, diagnosis and clinical management of babies, children and perinatal women.

PAEDIATRIC OSTEOPATHY - FAQ’s

What does a pediatric osteopath do?

A paediatric osteopath uses gentle, hands-on techniques to assess and treat tension, movement restrictions, and imbalances in babies and children. Treatments aim to support healthy development, ease discomfort, and improve mobility in a non-invasive, calming way.

Does the NHS recognise osteopathy?

Yes, osteopathy is recognised by the NHS as an allied health profession. While most osteopathic treatment is accessed privately, some NHS trusts do offer limited osteopathy services or referrals.

Should children go to an osteopath?

Children may benefit from seeing an osteopath for issues like feeding difficulties, unsettled behaviour, posture concerns, or after minor injuries. Osteopathy can gently support their musculoskeletal health during growth and development.

Is it worth seeing an osteopath for babies?

Many parents find osteopathy helpful for babies who are unsettled, have feeding issues, or experienced a difficult birth. Gentle cranial techniques may help ease tension and support relaxation, sleep, and comfort.
