Ultrasound Guided Injections

ULTRASOUND GUIDED INJECTIONS

At the Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy, in addition to our MSK Diagnostics services, we also we offer Ultrasound Guided Injections. These injections are performed by MSK Sonographer and Physiotherapist Chris Pruvey at our clinic in Putney.

What are Ultrasound Guided Injections?

Ultrasound-guided injections use real-time imaging to guide a needle directly into the target area. This offers greater precision, comfort, and effectiveness than non-guided techniques. Modern ultrasound imaging is not only used in pregnancy, but also plays a vital role in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. It provides high-resolution views of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. This helps guide accurate treatment.

The benefits of Ultrasound Guided Injections

  1. Accurate Diagnosis: Combining clinical assessment with a full diagnostic ultrasound scan
  2. Precise Injection: Real-time imaging ensures accurate needle placement
  3. Improved Comfort: Enhanced use of local anaesthetic and reduced tissue trauma
  4. Better Outcomes: Optimised delivery for faster and longer-lasting relief

Conditions suitable for Ultrasound Guided Injections

Common causes of musculoskeletal pain include:

  • Biomechanical dysfunctions (tightness/weakness)
  • Degenerative changes (arthritis, tendinopathy)
  • Soft tissue injuries (tears or inflammation)

Depending on the root cause, your clinician may recommend:

  • Steroid injections for inflammation-driven pain
  • Hyaluronic acid injections for joint degeneration or chronic conditions

Steroid injections for joint and tendon pain

Steroid injections are effective for reducing inflammation-related pain. At the Putney Clinic, these are guided by ultrasound for maximum accuracy and minimal discomfort. Among the common conditions treated are:

  • Frozen Shoulder
  • De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis
  • Trigger Finger/Thumb
  • Knee Arthritis Flares
  • Shoulder Impingement

Hyaluronic acid injections for degenerative joint pain

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring lubricant found in joints and tendon sheaths. In cases of osteoarthritis or chronic tendon pain, HA injections can offer longer-term relief compared to steroids.

Ostenil injections

Ostenil® is a leading HA product range for MSK conditions. Multiple formulations are available at Putney Clinic for joint and tendon-related pain. For more information, visit the Ostenil website on: www.trbchemedica.co.uk.

Durolane Injections

Durolane® is a high molecular weight HA product designed for large joints such as the hip, knee, or shoulder. Its larger volume (3ml) may provide enhanced and longer-lasting effects. Read more about Durolane injections.
