STRETCH AND RELEASE
5-week course with Cherie
Next course date to be announced
The current guidance from both the American College of Sports Medicine and Harvard Medical School is that most people should perform flexibility exercises for each of the major muscle groups in both the upper and lower body, at least twice a week. With this is mind, we are pleased to announce a new exercise class called "Stretch and Release".
Our Stretch and Release classes
This is a 5-week programme devised by Cherie Lathey. The Stretch and Release programme incorporates Cherie’s 30 years as a senior Yoga teacher and fitness instructor. Whether you have reduced muscle and joint flexibility as a result of a sedentary job with too much sitting, getting older, or the result of playing sport, this course will benefit you.
Stretch and Release classes focus on stretches and release techniques for the whole body to improve posture, mobility, functional strength and the prevention of injuries. The emphasis is to lengthen tight or shortened muscles that contribute and create tension, to improve your body's ability to function with less restriction.
This class may include the use of balls, bolsters, foam rollers and other small equipment to help facilitate stretches. There will also be a relaxation at the end of each session.
What is stretching?
Stretching is a controlled and deliberate lengthening of muscles and fascia, to increase muscle flexibility and improve the range of motion in our joints.
The benefits of stretching
- Improved muscle flexibility and mobility of our joints.
- Improved blood circulation: increasing oxygen and removing waste from our muscles.
- Better posture: reducing tightness in the postural muscles improves our postural alignment.
- Reduces risk of injury.
- Improves performance in daily life and sport.
- Reduces stress: calms the mind while stretching, particularly when focusing on mindfulness and meditation.
