PREGNANCY MASSAGE

During pregnancy, women’s bodies go through many changes, which affect them both physiologically and emotionally. Therefore, pregnancy massage can be a wonderful experience not only for the mother, but also for the baby she is carrying in her womb.

As the baby grows, the centre of gravity shifts forward. As a result, the spinal curve can become exaggerated and women start experiencing lower back pain, sore hips and general aches and pains. This is especially so in the last trimester of pregnancy.

Due to the growing belly, mums to be get increasingly uncomfortable and cannot stay in one position for very long. Subsequently, it is often difficult for them to get a good night’s sleep. This is also the time when they start preparing for childbirth, which, understandably, can also be a very anxious time.

The benefits of Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage can be beneficial in several ways.

  • Massage releases muscle tension and eases sciatic pain and backaches.
  • It helps to lower high blood pressure and stimulate the circulation. The better the circulation, the more oxygenated blood and nutrition will reach the placenta. This is vital for the development of the baby.
  • Massage promotes relaxation, thus reducing stress and anxiety. This, in turn, helps to create a general sense of well-being.

When is it safe to have a Pregnancy Massage?

Prenatal massages are usually conducted once the initial 14.5 weeks have passed. If you have any concerns about having a massage or if there are any special circumstances, please consult your GP or midwife.

What do treatments involve?

In our treatments, we provide a memory foam cushion that supports the mother’s whole body, especially the growing belly and breasts. Women lay on their side, which allows the therapist to work on both the upper and lower body. As well as this, it allows the mother to relax and and feel safe and supported throughout the massage.
